The District Team to Poland returned on September 30th and can report that with HIS assistance much was accomplished.
The team had two major responsibilities while in Poland . We were to assist in the construction (inside only) of the Sweet Surrender Coffee Shop in a suburban Gdansk location and to provide teachers to conduct classes on American culture in a local school.
The team also had the opportunity to meet with the mayor and present him with a personalized Chicago CUB jersey. (see photo #5)
The team constructed a display case, accomplished major plumbing installation, installed electrical outlets, track lighting and other electrical requirements throughout the building, tore down and then rebuilt platforms, dividers and installed beams, created many unique table tops, painted and sometimes re-painted the walls after major patching and sanding. Lunch meals were prepared each day by the team. See photos of before and after at the Sweet Surrender Coffee Shop.
The seven teachers taught classes for five days in the local school after meeting with the local teachers for orientation. The Administrator of the District was very flattering to what our teachers accomplished. The teachers were praised by the school administrator in the meeting with the mayor. (see photos)
Here is a quote from Thea Hanson, who serves in Poland , regarding the team. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist. But it does take a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, a decorating crew, a cook, a musician, a pastor, a teacher… more than anything, a willing heart. Yesterday’s dreams of a coffee shop ministry have become the hope of today; and in the near future will become a reality–in large part due to the work of the Chicago Central District Work & Witness team.”
Thea also reported: Effect of teachers in school: Connection deepened with local school, students and teachers; some students live in my neighborhood, others close to the coffee shop (I can hardly walk anywhere without being recognized by kids now)
